The Rural Sustainability Program provides individuals and communities, through their local organizations, with assistance in addressing the root causes and impacts of hunger, poverty and societal conditions that give rise to the inequities that result in hunger and poverty.  There are six areas of activities under this program, each briefly described below:

  1. Gender and Development (GAD): Addresses the specific needs of women by organizing and challenging gender based discrimination; support women's economic empowerment by facilitation of training in business management and providing capital for savings and micro credit for production and marketing activities. (back)

  2. Earth, Culture and Spirituality (ECS): Promotes concepts and practices that contribute to environmental and economic sustainability, respect for the "integrity of God's creation" and the integration of cultural and spiritual values in everyday activities. (back)

  3. Technical Consultant Services/Appropriate Technology (TCS/AT): Functions to facilitate access to technologies that are relevant to the needs of development communities. The program acts as an instrument for organizing, educating and responding to specific economic problems related to the use of technology and supports projects that access and develop alternate technologies that are appropriate to the needs of rural communities. Embodied in the implementation of this program are concepts and practices of sustainability, education, training and skills transfer, environmental conservation and cultural compatibility. (back)

  4. Social and Racial Justice (SRJ): Raises awareness of the presence of social and racial injustices in society and their impacts on communities and nations and confronts the root causes through analysis, education and action. (back)

  5. Rural Legal Assistance (RLA): Assists local communities and their advocates in protecting the human rights of indigenous and rural peoples and their access to land, water and other natural resources. In the era of "technological globalization," not only are the natural resources of indigenous and rural peoples under threat of expropriation, but also their biological resources, traditional knowledge and even their personal and collective genetic resources. (back)

  6. Training: Facilitates delivery of training to various groups in skills that lead to capacity building and decreased dependency, whether this is at the individual, organizational or community level. Training sessions may take the form of on site farmer-to-farmer production related training; institutional based training for members of community. (back)

Capacity Restoration for Community Organizations Affected by Disasters: Assists partners in restoration and rebuilding of their capabilities to function effectively following natural disasters and to address specific issues of injustice, resulting from or exacerbated by disasters. (back)
